TWA Poet: Wallace Stevens

1879 - 1955

Today is the birthday of Modernist poet Wallace Stevens, born in Reading, Pennsylvania (1879), an insurance executive for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1955 for Collected Poems (1954). He was the son of a wealthy lawyer and was educated at Harvard before entering New York University Law School.
