Thank you for this post. I always enjoy TWA for interesting information of which I was not previously aware. Wish it were still broadcast locally. I had never heard of Fowler before, which amazes me as an aging, somewhat persnickety Language Person (to borrow from Dave Barry). I learned to write as a youngster, primarily from avid reading, was introduced to Strunk and White as an undergraduate, and the Chicago Manual of Style as a grad student. I'll have to get a copy of Fowler now, if only to enjoy quotations such as those you cited. Thanks again.
