It’s been over 40 years since I visited the Statue of Liberty, but I still remember the bronze plaque with Emma Lazarus’ poem. I thought it interesting that, at the bottom, the plaque was inscribed with its creator’s name, Tiffany’s of New York.

Seventeen million people saw Lady Liberty when they approached America for the first time on their way to Ellis island. Nowadays we greet hopefuls with a wall.

Many years ago my mother read the Little Orphant Annie poem to her granddaughters, with extra dramatic flair on “the goblins will git you if you don’t watch out!” Always a favorite. I can still hear her voice.
