Poet Stanley Kunitz was born on this day in 1905. He was appointed the United States poet laureate when he was 95 years old. He died at the age of 100.
Tragic indeed it is that de Toquivillles impressed reaction to 'middle class democracy' in America is now rendered over-optimistic-even quaint- by a majority of our GOP -(now unofficially re-titled the ANFP -or American Neo-Facist Party!)
We are a nation that has allowed & tolerated an abuse of 'free speech' by a dangerously large minority of our populace. They have, in effect, urinated contemptuously, not only on de T's optimistic views of our capacity for middle class governance., but on democracy itself.
I love Don Marquis and I love Stanley Kunitz. I have loved them both for a long time (you can't love either of them without having loved them for a long time) but I never knew they had the same birthday. That kind of puts a shine on it.
I am enjoying the new format as it expands my reading of interesting information. The information in my email today was again a different day than the one I clicked on to get the full version with Poem, which turned out to be Wednesday November 29, 2017. I enjoyed both days, but could not get to the Friday July 29, 2016 poem but that is fine with me. I also enjoy the comments and responses and joined as a Founding Member to participate at some point. I am in my Gift Career of Mentoring and need help with the American Legion & Auxiliary Program I promote locally in Massachusetts. It has produced more benefits than this reluctant Lieutenant from the Vietnam era could ever have imagined, and should continue in every State of the Union.

FOR SHAME!

The link seems to have been corrected, but the detour by the bear was great.
