It was on this day in 1937 that John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men was published. It’s the birthday of British paleoanthropologist Mary Douglas Leakey (1913) and of Babe Ruth (1895).
I met Steinbeck in Viet Nam in late January 1967I have his autograph. He was with a few GIs all in uniform so I didn't recognize him until I noticed his name strip on his chest and exclaimed, STEINBECK ! He was not in good health, that was obvious and he left too soon to visit with him. He died the next year. I read most of his books. He was in Can tho at the Viet Names Hospital helped by an Air Force Surgical Team I was part of. Tom Chisholm MD FACS White Bear Lake
