On this day in 1818 "Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus" was published. The novel was first published anonymously, but quickly became a sensation, and when 21-year-old Mary Shelley stepped forward as the author, many were doubtful that such a young woman could have crafted the deeply complex and intriguing story of creation, ethics, and philosophy. Frankenstein is now considered a modern classic, the very first science fiction novel, and became a popular symbol of feminist literature in the 1960s. Mary Shelley went on to write several more novels. She died at the age of 51 from a brain tumor.
GK…..There’s hope for us all. I’m betting there are a few liberals who are not “knee-jerk” and could carry on a useful conversation with conservatives without shouting at each other, as are our MN Capitol politicians are now in session. It’s far worse here lately than the Brits yelling at one another. Why we had a national congressman some years ago who could actually work productively with both sides of the aisle. Both! And he was of Irish descent. What a world it once was…..TK
It really cracks me up that someone with deep midwestern MN cred like Garrison Keillor paints Murdoch without describing the “pinnacle” of his newspaper baron career which is partnering with/megaphoning for the one man democracy wrecking ball that is DT: And RM recently admitted under oath on the stand that it included systemic lies by all his minions solely for power and profit.
I guess coming close to destroying our country and providing a destruction model for other countries that they are following isn’t really worthy news or worthy of including in a summary of his life for his birthday: Happy BD Rupert!
To quote a great writer (Mike Roykom, RIP) who eventually succumbed to cashing RM pay stubs: "No self respecting fish would consent to being wrapped in a newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch"
I loved bell-bottom pants in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I even had two pairs that belonged to my father when he was in the Navy in WWII. One pair was made of denim and the other was of very dense wool. I used the latter pair for skiing.
I LOVE Mary Shelley's Frankenstein! I read it years ago and then again while at a lonely, isolated cabin on a very dark night! I've also read The Monsters: MARY SHELLEY & THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
Thanks, Garrison, for reminding me of these readings of mine!
