September 3rd is the birthday of several female American writers. Novelist Alison Lurie (1926), anthropologist and author Loren Eiseley (1907), and writer Sarah Orne Jewett (1749). Also on this date in 1838, Frederick Douglass boarded a train to escape from slavery.
Enjoyed this! Sarah Orne Jewett has been a favorite. Years ago I gave my Dad a copy of her story about the dog man who was pressured to lend his dog to another hunter. The twist was that the hunter returned to the breeder to say that the dog never came back after being set on a track. The breeder said "I know. He's been home since then." Simple Yankee humor before many of us were hatched.
