In the late 1700's there was a notorious British Romantic poet called "mad, bad, and dangerous to know." That man was Lord Byron, born George Gordon in London on this day in 1788. Notorious even now for his affairs with both sexes, and other risque behavior, he became a literary rock star: His poem "The Corsair" sold 10,000 copies on the day it was published.
