We "had to" read "The Scarlet Letter" in 10th grade and I actually enjoyed it. Even though we lived in Concord, MA, our English teachers didn't have us read works by many of the Concord authors.
I guess they all thought that other teachers had or would. Here is a link to an interesting article about the houses where Hawthorne and his family lived in Concord. They are now museums and part of Minuteman National Historic Park.
