"Most of one's life is one prolonged effort to prevent oneself from thinking." said by Aldous Huxley, the author of "A Brave New World" who was born on this day in 1894.
Jean Shepherd was one of our favorites on radio. In the sequel to A Christmas Story, Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss, his family drives a 1948 Chevy. In 1956, I learned to drive on the navy blue version of the same car. Vacuumatic stick shift, floor starter, hand choke…great fun and a challenge to drive in winter for a 16-year-old girl and her friends. The vacuumatic shift would get too cold to shift, we would roll backward down hills, the engine would die, and we needed 3 feet to restart…one for the clutch, one for the brake, and one for the floor starter. Had to roll down the window and use hand signals simultaneously. Driving is much easier now but not nearly as much fun.

Glad you've discovered Jean Sheppard. Your work always reminded me of his. Don't know which I like better.
