How refreshing was the story of John of the Cross. He kept his bearings of refreshing the wandering orders those many years ago. He and Teresa righted the ship of their order and a better focus followed. And they did it with poetic dignity.
I’m surprised that Garrison’s commentary on Ambrose Bierce was so short and didn’t mention his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in 1913, or his deeply cynical and endlessly amusing The Devil’s Dictionary. For many years the musicians of the Sitka Summer Music Festival in Alaska were entertained with the annual reading by our great friend Gordon Wright (conductor of the Fairbanks Symphony and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra) of Bierce’s short story Oil of Dog.
Boxers used to be so expressive like Jack Dempsey. Certainly, Ali could distract his opponents with butterfly precision and speed. My late uncle used to educate me on his favourite boxers. Sugar Ray Robinson was someone who was an elite puncher as was Joe Louis. I always learn something new about saints. Thank goodness for that and once again GK you are a national treasure.

Surprised there’s no mention of the years John Ciardi was on NPR. I suspect he was known to most people by his wonderful commentary…
