Custer held the rank of lieutenant colonel at the time of this death, not the relatively lower rank of lieutenant. I can guess what happened here, but getting the important simple things like this wrong tends to cast doubt on the validity of other, larger matters presented as facts.

George Armstrong Custer was an under graduate when the American Civil started. Commission as an officel and sent to Washinto D.C., he requested active war duty. He quickly rose in rank . His highest rank was that as a general. He was relived of duty just before his group was sent to Montana. He was allowed to join and was in charge the days before the last battle. He was supossed to wait for other forces, but forged ahead. He was hoping to be nominated as a candidtae for president.
