Erich Maria Remarque‘s All Quiet on the Western Front was the first “serious” book I read .. in the 6th grade. I was absolutely spellbound. At age 76, I reread it as my first book of 2023 and not only was I equally spellbound but I found myself thankful for a small town school in north Mississippi that had such books readily available. I wonder if, these days, if the puckered-ups would allow such works in their schools.

One of my literary goals is to read the classics from cover to cover. It seems like decent films were surpassed by their text counterpart. I never did read All Quiet on the Western Front. war novels are few and far between for me. I would like to read the Art of War and The World Played Chess. Thank you to all the authors who defy our expectations and are considered a true icon now.
