“A Thunderstorm In Town” by Thomas Hardy from Collected Poems of Thomas Hardy. © Wordsworth Editions, Ltd., 1994. ORIGINAL TEXT AND AUDIO - 2017 Today is Flag Day here in the United States. Two hundred forty years ago, on this day in 1777, the government officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as our national flag. The 50 stars on today’s flag represent the nation’s 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the 13 original states. The color red signifies hardiness and valor; white, purity and innocence; and blue, vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Thank you for including photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White!
I deeply love that quote by Sec. Lane about the flag. It really hits home about how we should view ourselves from a generation that didn’t just use patriotism as a tool against each other (most of the time.)
We had forgotten Bourke White's life was cut short by Parkinsons. She is worth remembering!
